Help! Outdoor wedding, good or bad idea?

Published by kristineb at 11:32 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

So my wedding isn’t until the fall of 2010, I shouldn’t be planning yet, right? But, I’m still floating along in post engagement glee, so of course I’ve been day dreaming away.

I’m glad we opted for a long engagement. I never got why my brides were so stressed out until I started wedding planning. This week, I’ve been thinking all about the location.

I want to get married in Bloomington, Indiana because it’s where I went to school, and a beautiful city. The fall foliage is great so I’m thinking something outside. I contacted a rep with the a local national park, Hoosier National Forest, who got me thinking. In his reply email he mentioned a spring weeding might mean ticks or chiggers.

I’m worried about what else unexpected I’m leaving out. The weather is an obvious one difficult to plan around. And getting married in a national forest might mean an indoor plan isn’t an easy option.

Help my brainstorm, and decide if getting married outside in the country is going to be a living nightmare or not. Anybody ever attend an outdoor wedding nightmare?

I can’t wait for your responses. I’ve learned so much from not only researching my blog posts, but also from your responses.

I would love to get married outside. Either on my property (approx. 6 acres) or on the beach (I love the ocean). But, beyond that I don’t know much to help. Many, many years ago I was married and I’m glad we were indoors as it rained. So, I would suggest a back up plan in case of bad weather. Maybe have a hall ready just in case.

Great points Anne. I do need to have some sort of inside facility reserved. As far as raining on your wedding day, don’t they say that’s good luck.

Meredith, I actually had found some something similar. I agree the all in one idea is easier on everyone. My second bride ended up finding out after everything was booked there was a large convention across from her church on wedding day, so they had to buy shuttles to move guests from church to reception, crazy expensive.

My daughter had an outdoor wedding in July in Hermitage TN in our backyard. You always hope the weather will cooperate. A fall wedding in Indiana should be beautiful!! Good Luck!

I’m with you on the long engagement–we’re doing that too. It’s mostly for financial reasons because we both went back to college recently, but it’s also great to have years for slow, low stress planning : ).

Anyway, I like the idea of an outdoor wedding. I’ve attended two in city parks and one in a backyard with a lake, and they were all lovely. Of course the weather cooperated… I would want to have a backup plan in case it didn’t. And ticks, yikes. Make sure there’s plenty of bug spray or something on hand for everyone. Many national and state parks also have gorgeous indoor facilities that can be rented, though I don’t know much about Indiana : ).
